In order to expand taconite operations, Hibbing Taconite Company proposed to relocate CSAH 79. Their goal was to relocate this rural highway while minimizing operational costs associated with moving mining hauls.

Hibbing Taconite Company and JPJ Engineering worked closely with St. Louis County for the design of a 1.8-mile alignment of CSAH 79. In order to accomplish this realignment, a 300-foot pre-cast concrete “BEBO” arch structure would be needed to allow the public to pass under a mining haul road.

The completion of this bypass has allowed the Hibbing Taconite Company to continue with its long-term mining operations without disturbances from local traffic needs.
