JPJ Engineering began work on one of the first segments of the Mesabi Trail in 1995 when the City of Nashwauk constructed a two-mile non-motorized trail that could eventually be connected to a larger trail system.

JPJ Engineering provided design, construction management, right-of-way assistance, and project memorandums for seven segments of the trails.

Since that time, the St. Louis and Lake Counties Regional Rail Authority has worked to establish the Mesabi Trail, a 132-mile trail that extends from Grand Rapids to Ely through 24 other communities.

The St. Louis and Lake Counties Regional Rail Authority continues working on expanding the trail system as local, state, and federal funding sources are available.
